Completing the B Corp Impact Assessment
Completing the B Corp Impact Assessment was very eye-opening; by answering detailed questions about various aspects of our business, we learned what we were doing right, what we were missing, and where we needed to improve. The biggest changes we have implemented across each impact area are:
Governance: Early on in the process, we amended our Articles of Association such that all stakeholders must be considered when business decisions are made. The new amendment stipulates that our CEO and any other directors must consider Chrome’s employees, our suppliers and customers, and the impact of our operations on the community and environment when making big business decisions.
Workers: We were delighted to score exceptionally well in this section, and we pride ourselves on compensating our employees well, offering generous holiday and benefits packages, and promoting mental health and wellbeing. While we were confident our employees were happy, we had never formally sent through an employee engagement survey; creating an anonymous survey and circulating it to our staff allowed everyone to provide candid feedback and make suggestions. We will send this employee engagement survey every year so that we can track our progress and monitor employee satisfaction.
Community: Chrome is proud to have invested time and resources into making films pro bono for charities and other worthy causes. Additionally, Chrome has donated generously to various charities over the years; however, we realised through filling out the B Impact Assessment that we had not factored in or made provisions for individual volunteering on Company time. We have since introduced 2 paid days’ volunteering for each employee to give their time to a charity of their choice.
Environment: We began measuring our carbon footprint in 2023, an exercise that has held us accountable to the choices we make – from how we commute and travel to how we select an energy provider. Several of our employees have committed to ‘active commutes’ (i.e., walking or cycling) a few days of the week. We have also upgraded our cleaning products to those that are non-toxic and more environmentally friendly.
These are just a few examples of small changes that can make a big difference. B Corp isn’t expecting companies to turn over a new (green!) leaf overnight; rather, they make it clear how to take small steps as we continue this journey.
